I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter No. 4934/10 dated 29th. ultime informing me that His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government proposed to dismiss me from my office on the ground of misconduct in my

capasity of a public officer.

In the letter under reply you refer specific-

-ally to three charges which have been made against me, direct me to forwrd you in writing any reply that I may desire

failing to make to those charges not later than noon today, which my dismissal will be forthwith confirmed.

On the occasion of proceedings being taken by Mr. J. Hastings in respect of a sum of money of which he had been defrauded under a forged deed, I was the victim of a groundless suspicion. I was first spoken to about the matter by Mr. Wakeman and he after questioning no, and, as I gathered from his manner and conversation, evincing disbelief in what I

D said, sent me to see the Chief Detective Inspector and J. Hastings. The latter accused me of being the person who had

extracted the deed from the Land Office.

Hestings

On my repudiating the charge Mr. stated that unless the money was returned to him or the culprit discovered the whole of the Land Office Clerical Steff would be dismissed and banished from the Colony. Mr. Hastings assured me

the Government would certainly so act.

Mr. Heatings further told me that if he could get his money back he would let the matter drop and the Land Office clerks would then be safe and he asked me to do my utmost to induce whoever had committed the theft to refund the money. On returning to the Land Office I dotailed to wr. "ake-
